Textbook 1.3 Question 23

  • Before I looked for the surface area I had to divided the side into a way I could find the surface area easily because the shape is irregular.
    • So I divided the shape into two pieces one into a triangle and one into a rectangle.
    • First I used the Pythagorean Theorem to find the measurement of the base of the pool.
    • After I square rooted my answer that gave me the length of the base.
    • Now I can find the surface area of that side.

  • Now I started finding the surface area of the inside walls of the pool that need painting which was the bottom of the pool, the side, back and front.
  • I found the surface area of the rectangle in the irregular shape then the triangle then added them together, then multiplied it by two.
  • Then I found the S.A of the base (bottom of the pool) by multiplying the length and width.
  • Next I found the front and the back by using the same formula but different heights because the pool gradually gets greater.
  • Then as a result I added all the it together and got an answer of 389 m^2.
*This may not be the answer at the back because I could not find a way to get that answer. (:

Test: Rational Word Problem Question 6

  • First I had to find how many times does 1  3/4  goes into 15   1/4.
    • I made this easier for myself by changing the fractions into decimals.
  • Then I found out that 1.75 goes into 15.25, eight times.
    • This is because 1.75 x 8 = 14 and if you were to multiply by a higher number, your answer will be longer than 15.25. For example 1.75 x 9 = 15.75.
  • This now let's us know that 14.00 m of the plank is cut in equal pieces of 8.
  • Now we have to find out how much of the plank is left over.
    • We find the solution to this by subtracting the length of the plank which is 15.25 by 14.
    • 15.25 - 14.00 = 1.25 m
  • So there is 1.25 m left over of the wooden plank.

2.4 Textbook Question 24

For this question I had to find the distance of how much a person can see across the ocean to the horizon. I know that in order to find the distance you have to find the square root of 12.74 x h. The height is how much the person's eyes are above the water.

~First I re - wrote the formula.
~Then I found out the height of how much meters Adele's eyes are above the water which was 4.1 m.
~Next I multiplied 12.74 x 41. Then I got the answer of 52.234.
~Lastly now I have to find the square root of 52.234, so I got the answer of around 7.2273 km. Then I rounded my answer to 7.20 km.

In this question it is very similar to the first one. The only thing different I have to do in convert the height  which was 165 cm into m. I did this by dividing 165 by 100 because there is 100 cm in 1 meter.

First I re - wrote the formula.
Then I found the height that Brian was above the water, which was 165 cm then converted in 1.65 m.
Then I finally multiplied 12.74 by 1.65 and got the answer of 21.021.
Lastly I found the square root of 21.021 and I got around 4.5848 km, and rounded this answer to 4.6 km.

In this question I converted the height of Yvonne's eyes above the water into meters by multiplying 5 ( The height in km. ) by 1000 because there is 1000 meters in 1 kilometer.

First I re - wrote the formula.
Then I found the height that Yvonne's eyes were above the water, which was 5 km then I converted it to 5000 m.
Then I multiplied 12.74 by 5000 and got a product of 63700.
Lastly I found the square root of 63700 and got an answer of around 252.2885 km and then I rounded it to 252.4 km.

Textbook Pages 69 Question 16

~Before answering any questions I found out how much money does each person has.

~In the question it says that Boris has 2  1/2  times as much as  Anna.

~To find this I converted 2  1/2 into a decimal. In the fraction there are 2 wholes, so in the decimal there is a 2 in the ones place or one place to the left from the decimal. Then I converted 1/2 into a decimal by dividing the numerator by the denominator. Which is 0.5. Then I just put the two numbers together which is 2.50.

~To find how much money Boris has is by multiplying 2.50 by Anna's amount of cash which is $25.60. This is because in the question is says that Boris had 2   1/2 TIMES as much as Anna. The product to this question is $64.00.

~Next I found out how much money does Charlie have.

~I converted 3/4 into a decimal by dividing 3 by 4 which is 0.75.

~Then i multiplied 3/4 by 25.60. Then the answer I get is $19.20.

~In this picture I showed how I got my answer.

~I added Anna's, Charlie's and Boris' amount of money to get how much money they had all together.

~Which was $108.80

~ In order to find how much more money does Boris have than Charlie is by subtracting Boris' amount of money by Charlie's amount of money.

~ So the expression is 64 - 19.20 and the difference is $44.80.
